Fearsaid

  • Type Design

Goal

Design something fun and spikey, based entirely in fantasy, for book covers and other display uses. Early inspirations were the exaggeratedly tall and ornate steeples of gothic cathedrals, the strong curves of wrought iron fences, the exciting things that can happen when candle wax is allowed to drip, the choices made by the first type designers as calligraphy was adapted for print, and the grace and elegance of lathe-turned spindles.

Solution

The result of a semester’s work is Fearsaid, a spindly typeface for use on the covers of books about spiders, fairy tales, and darkness, for labeling adventurous spice tins, and for addressing love letters that are better left unsent.
